Taking Off on the Right Tentacle

On June 7th, 2018 Rogue was lucky enough to witness the release of a Giant Pacific Octopus from Hatfield Marine Science Center on the dock behind our World Headquarters in Newport, Ore.

Early Thursday morning a group of volunteers and aquarists from the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore. gathered on the narrow dock behind our brewery and World Headquarters to witness the release of a Giant Pacific Octopus. The octopus had been cared for and on exhibit at the science center. Yesterday, the time had come for the majestic Invertebrate to return back into the wild.

This will likely not be Hatfield's last release at the Rogue Brewery. Sid Stetson, Aquarist at HMSC, told us they used to release the marine wildlife at the old boat ramp at their science center but riprap (rock or other material used to armor shorelines) was not safe for the animals and made that option unavailable.

The magic only lasted a few seconds as the octopus retreated under the dock but Sid Stetson claimed it was a "highly successful release."
