Know Your Hops, Rogue Farms Alluvial And Newport

Welcome back to IPA May, a month-long celebration of America’s favorite style of craft beer and the aromatic hops cones that make it all possible.

We began growing our own hops at Rogue Farms in Independence, Oregon eight years ago. A lot of the credit for helping us get started goes to this guy.

Back then, there was a world-wide shortage of hops. Rogue and other craft brewers were scrambling to get their hands on any hops that weren’t already bought up by the large, industrial brewers.

During our darkest hour, we wondered if we’d have enough hops for Rogue Brewmaster John Maier to craft all of our beers. John had already established his reputation as a craft beer legend because of his love of hops, and the creative ways he used them to brew the many Rogue ales, porters, lagers and stouts. They didn’t call him John “More Hops” Maier for nothing.

No one dared break the news to John. Besides, it didn’t seem right to deny the artist his favorite tool. Our breakthrough came when someone at Rogue suggested, “Why not grow our own?” That was the beginning of Rogue Farms and the GYO Revolution.

John selected the eight varieties of hops we’ve grown over the years. He always comes to the farm for the hop harvest so he can personally pick the cones he’ll use to make that season’s Wet Hop Ale. John’s love of hops led him to create our Hop family of IPAs, 4 Hop, 6 Hop, 7 Hop and 8 Hop IPA. We have a lot to celebrate during IPA May.

This year’s crop is off to a strong start. Thanks to a warm winter and spring, our bines emerged early and are growing fast. The harvest will be here sooner than you think.

Come to Rogue Farms this season for a front row seat of the Grow Your Own Revolution. Enjoy one of our IPAs and watch the hops grow!
