Ask kids where food comes from and a lot of them will answer, “the supermarket.” It’s kind of sad, but chances are their parents are not much better informed.
So when the local YMCA came to us about building a community garden for children here at the Hopyard we thought it was a great idea.
The YMCA asked for six raised garden beds. We found a good spot close the Hop ‘N’ Bed and Josh spent the good part of a day assembling them. Although the pictures don’t show it, we’ve also filled them with soil.
The community garden will be a teaching tool for the YMCA to show kids how to garden and grow their own food. For this bunch, if you ask them where food comes from, at least they’ll know it comes from the garden. Of course, most food comes from the farm. But “garden” is good answer, too.
