We’re about a week away from the summer solstice, aka the longest day of the year.
On June 20th, the sun will rise over Rogue Farms at 5:25am and won’t drop below the horizon until 9:02pm. 15 hours, 36 minutes and 31 seconds of daylight.
This is when is our hop bines go into overdrive. Long periods of daylight trigger the natural hormones within hops that cause them to grow several inches in a day, several feet in a week. You can literally watch the hops grow.
So how’s this year’s crop coming along?
Our bines are just starting to hit the trellis wires – about 18 feet off the ground.
We grow seven varieties of hops at Rogue Farms on 42 acres. That includes Alluvial, Freedom, Independent, Liberty, Rebel, Revolution and Yaquina hops. Each variety has a unique profile of aroma and bitterness.
Put them in the hands of Brewmaster John Maier, and he has limitless possibilities to create new and interesting ales, porters, lagers, stouts, kolsch and braggot. They’re all part of our proprietary palate of flavors of known origin.
Look closely, and you can see tiny cones forming among the leaves.
From now until the end of July the bines will stretch twice as long as they are now, the cones will grow larger and we’ll soon see those tiny specks of lupulin.
Then, in late August, we’ll start the harvest. We always kick things off with Freedom hops because they’re the first to ripen. John will come out to personally select the cones he’ll use in this year’s batch of Wet Hop Ale. We’ll pick the remaining six varieties by mid-September.
