This single malt (100% Maris Otter from Britain) and four hop recipe (Newport, Sterling, Cascade and Amarillo hops) which this homebrew store calls an IPA on steroids, is available on either extract or all grain kits. To learn more about the kits, visit http://morebeer.com and search on the word rogue! Other Rogue Ales homebrew recipes have been published in the 5th Anniversary Issue of Brew Your Own Magazine (www.byo.com), and in Zymurgy, the official organ of the American Homebrewers Association. http://www.beertown.org/homebrewing/index.html NEWPORT HOPS ============ There is a new hop on the market called Newport. Some homebrewers have asked if there is a Rogue connection? Good question! An article describing the history of this new high-bittering alpha hop appeared on page 13 of the September 2002 issue of Agricultural Research. The article is on-line at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/AR/archive/sep02/hops0902.htm Newport was developed by USDA-ARS Geneticists John Henning and Al Haunold at Oregon State University in Corvalis. Rumor is at least one of them surfed in Newport, so the name appears to be locational, although Rogue Ale loyalists might like to disagree. And if James Brown is the Godfather of Soul Music, Henning and Haunold are the Godfathers of Hops. Their research has resulted in several important hop varieties like Crystal, Sterling and Horizon. All of which are key ingredients in the flavor profiles of many beers brewed in Newport at Rogue! John Maier has been brewing with Newport for awhile and is really pleased with the results, which include his 2003 Oregon Brewers Fest elixir, Skull Splitter (aka, Black Brutal Bitter), and recent batches of Mogul, and Imperial India Pale Ale, available on tap at your local Rogue Ales Public House. So next time you enjoy a beer brewed in Newport, read the label and see if it was brewed with Newport!
