Rogue Ales will be at GABF, and we invite those attending to sample the five beers we'll have on tap: Rogue Smoke, Mocha Porter, Honey Cream Ale, Old Crustacean, and American Amber. GABF is open to the public October 3rd to 5th from 5:30 until 10pm. The festival will be held in Denver at the Convention Center. Details are on-line at: http://www.beertown.org/GABF/index.htm If you are a local or plan on visiting Denver for GABF, be sure to visit Falling Rock Tap House on Blake Street for some special beers on tap this week: Rogue Chocolate Stout, Grateful Deaf's Summer Sue Wheat and Hoppy Cat ESB. Proceeds from sales of these draft beers will support Dove ~ Advocacy for Abused Deaf Women and Children. SUDS & SURF =========== "Suds & Surf", Newport's Microbrew Festival, is scheduled for Columbus Day Weekend, October 11-13th at the Rogue brewery. Festival hours: Friday 2-8pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 10am-3pm. The festival will have 60 booths featuring small breweries, food vendors and arts & crafts. Contact Colleen Cockrell at the Newport Chamber of Commerce for details: phone: 541-265-8801, email: cc@actionnet.net, or visit Newport Chamber's web page http://www.newportchamber.org/microbrew for details. DEAD GUY GLOWS ============== Halloween is the eve of All Saints' Day, which is the day before All Souls' Day, also known as Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos. Rogue's Dead Guy Ale logo was inspired by the Day of the Dead! For those of you not familiar with the holiday, Day of the Dead, check out: http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/muertos.html A special 22-ounce Dead Guy Ale bottle what glows in the dark is now available. What better bottle and beer to celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos with, so ask for it by name! Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Need a Halloween costume? How about some Dead Guy paraphernalia? We have Dead Guy t-shirts and embroidered baseball hats that glow in the dark, regular Dead Guy t-shirts and long sleeve t-shirts, Dead Guy hooded sweatshirts, & Dead Guy condoms and tattoos too! Check our mail order department at 800-489-4582, send an email to brewdawg@rogue.com, or visit the on-line store at: www.rogue.com/store.html KEIKO ===== Keiko, the famous killer whale that stared in the movie Free Willy, is free...well, maybe. Keiko spent several years at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, located next to Rogue Ales brewery, before being moved to Iceland. The famous 24 year old killer whale was released in July to join other Orcas during their migration, but soon was on his own and swam the 1400 km (870 miles) from Iceland to Norway. http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article.jhtml?articleID=401326 Locals are thrilled, but those who have spent millions on rehabilitating Keiko and preparing his release in the wild are concerned about his health and well-being. Seaquarium in Miami has proposed that Keiko should be captured and moved to Miami to spend his days performing with Lolita, an Orca captured in the Puget Sound in 1970! Check out this recent article http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/editorialsopinion/ 134541093_keikoed24.html in the Seattle Times about the hoopla! Keiko is certainly making a political statement by choosing to winter in Norway, a country that continues to hunt whales commercially. Rogue paid tribute to Keiko with Whale Ale, one of the early Aquarium series micropieces, and with Rogue's original root beer named Keiko, proceeds went to the Free Willy Foundation. ARTISAN BEER AND CHEESE TASTING =============================== A Slow Food and Beer Extravaganza is planned for October 14th at the Rogue Flanders Street Pub in Portland, OR. The Portland Slow Food convivium has organized an evening of ten craft beers paired with ten artisanal cheeses. The event will be hosted by local homebrewing/craft beer/cheese/sake guru Fred Eckhardt. Tickets are available at the Rogue Pub - 1339 NW Flanders, by calling 503-222-5910, or email michele@rogue.com with your credit card. Cost: $20 for Slow Food members, $25 for the public. Fred has hosted two previous beer and cheese tastings at the Rogue PDX pub. A review of one memorable evening in 2001 is on-line on Lucy Saunder's Beer Cook web page: http://www.bookcook.com/beercheese/roguecheese.html ROGUE SHUCKER ============= Stouts are the unsung hero when it comes to pairing oysters with a beverage. Chef Patrick McMurray from the StarFish Oyster Bed & Grill in Toronto, Canada has praised Shakespeare Stout as one of his favorite pairings (http://www.rogue.com/news-events.html). His recent email to rogue.com read: Hi there, I'm glad you liked the write-up on stouts and oysters. I've always been keen on Rogue. If you're in Toronto, please drop by for a bi-valve or 2. I'm off to the World Championships of Oyster Shucking in Galway, Ireland September 28 to represent Canada. Wish me luck!!" Ed: Best of Luck Patrick!
