GABF ==== Rogue Ales won three medals at the 23rd Annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver on October 2, 2004. Rogue's Issaquah Brewhouse won a silver medal in the American Wheat category for Bullfrog Ale, and brewster Hayley Meagher, accepted her first medal as a Rogue. Morimoto Soba Ale, part of the Rogue Signature Series, also won a silver medal in the Speciality Beer category, and Old Crustacean won the bronze in the Barleywine Category. GABF is the largest attended beer competition in the world with 398 breweries and brewpubs who entered 2016 beers in 67 categories. The festival drew 28,000 consumers during the three day event. For the complete winners list visit: http://www.beertown.com/events/gabf/04winners.htm DEAD GUY GLOWS ============== Halloween is the eve of All Saints' Day (November 1), which is the day before All Souls' Day (November 2nd), also known as Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos ~ a time to honor and care for the memories of those we have lost and love. Rogue's Dead Guy Ale logo--the skeleton drinking a Dead Guy Ale on top of a keg of Rogue beer--was inspired by the Day of the Dead! http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/muertos.html Look for two GLOW-IN-THE-DARK Dead Guy Ale packages: a new 64-ounce jug and the special edition 22-ounce GLOW bottle, a perfect beer to celebrate Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Try Dead Guy Ale with chili, stews, burgers, spicy Thai & Asian, or a piece of pizza. Dead Guy Ice Cream was served a la mode with Apple Pie at a beer dinner on October 8th at Rats Restaurant in Hamilton, NJ. Need some ideas on making a beer ice cream at home? Let us know, or visit the web site: http://www.beercook.com/articles/beericecream.htm Need a gift for a Rogue in your life? How about a GLOW-IN-THE-DARK Dead Guy t-shirt, embroidered baseball hat, a long sleeve t-shirt, or hooded Dead Guy sweatshirt. We even have Dead Guy condoms, tattoos, and yoyos! Contact our mail order department at 800-489-4582, send an email to momship@rogue.com, or visit the on-line store at: https://store.rogue.com/cart.php HOP HEAVEN ========== Did you see the photo of Rogue Brewer John "more hops" Maier wallowing in hops on rogue.com or in the current issue of Celebrator Beer News? It was taken at the Annen Brothers Hop Farm near Mt. Angel on Labor Day weekend when John picked up a 300 pound load of fresh Newport hops picked just before he arrived. These hops are very limited, only 1.5 acres are grown by one hop grower, John Annen. John Maier had the hops back at the Brewery and in the kettle in under 3 hours! Hop Heaven Ale was released for the Equinox (September 21-22) at Rogue Public Houses, and is available on tap only while supplies last. Hop Heaven will be on tap at The Bistro's Harvest Festival in Hayward, California on November 12th. http://www.rogue.com/news-events.html ROGUE IN THE PRESS ================== Winners of the First Annual Beer Journalism Awards were announced during the Great American Beer Festival on October, 2, 2004 where The Association of Brewers recognized the work of four journalists who wrote about the flavor and diversity of American beer. The 2004 Beer Journalism Awards, sponsored by Rogue Ales and the Association of Brewers, were given to James P. DeWan for work that appeared in the Chicago Tribune, to Lisa Morrison for a column that appeared on the Internet Broadcast Systems network and to Stan Hieronymus for an article that appeared in All About Beer Magazine. The Association also recognized the work of veteran beer journalist Michael Jackson with a Distinguished Service Award. Kudos to one and all! http://www.kirotv.com/food/2650106/detail.html http://www.allaboutbeer.com http://www.beertravelers.com/lists/hops.html http://www.beertown.org/pr/pdf_Word/journalism_award_winners.doc http://www.probrewer.com/news/news-002349.php Gourmet Magazine has a piece about Morimoto Soba Ale and Imperial Pilsner on page 100 of the October 2004, Restaurant Issue. James Rodewald wrote:,"The Soba Ale is the lightest, but it's far from wimpy. Hops dominate the nose, and that herbiness telegraphs its crisp finish. The flavor builds slowly, with the roasted-buckwheat flavors becoming quite pronounced...My favorite, though, is the Imperial Pilsner. It's a hugh beer--the alcohol is 8.8 percent--but the malty sweetness is balanced by an intense hoppiness." Both beers are available in select markets. Let us know if you cannot find them, and given that, where you think these beers should be sold! Sante' Magazine has an article about beer in the October, 2004 Issue. Marnie Old describes Rogue I2PA as: "Unfiltered topaz color with candied-grapefruit aromas. A malty powerhouse with flavors of mango, chutney and pineapple upside-down cake, ferocious hop finish lasts into the night. (food pairing suggestion) Red Creole Jambalya." Bravo Marnie! Kudos to the NY Times for writing about beer on a frequent and regular basis! "Chug This? Shame on You" was the title of Eric Asimov's piece on October 13th, about the flavors and wonders of Bieres des Garde or Farmhouse Beer. The amount of press devoted to quality beer in the NY Times should be applauded! In a previous article, "Loving Stouts for All the Right Reasons", the tasting panel choose Rogue Shakespeare Stout as #1 in a tie with Sam Smith Imperial Stout! http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/17/dining/17WINE.html The July 30, 2003 edition of Dining In has a photo of Chef Morimoto sabering a bottle of his Signature Series Soba Ale...Allez Cuisine! http://www.rogue.com/pdfs/NYTMM73003.pdf William Brand of the Oakland Tribune posted his Beer Blog on October 1st about a beer and cheese pairing event for the press during the 2004 Great American Beer Festival. "Next came Rogue Chocolate Stout, Rogue Brewing, Newport OR, and Cabots Smoky Bacon Cheddar. This was a champ. The cheese was creamy and rich _ and the bacon gave it a dreamy, smoky note. Add the Chocolate Stout, whew." Now that is an idea for an unusual fondue or welsh rarebit! http://oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82%257E30230%257E,00.html Relix Magazine gave a shout out to Shakespeare Stout in the September 2004 issue, awarding it the winning Stout in their review of eight ales, lagers, porters, and stouts on page 41, in the livin' section. The soundbyte: "If I can't eat before a show, two of these feel like a five-course meal with all the flavors for half the price!" http://www.relix.com StarChefs.com wrote about Rogue Ales in the August 2004 issue. StarChefs is a website devoted to all things culinary! Here is a soundbyte: "Rogue lives up to its name in its attitude and marketing while remaining serious about the quality of their beers and quality of life." http://starchefs.com/features/star_brewers/html/rogue_ale.shtml Toronto's beer scene web site (http://www.bartowel.com) announced that Rogue Chocolate Stout would available in mid-September, which it is. Thanks to the Rogue-savy Canadians for your emails and support! Ralph Woodall of Hopunion interviewed John "more hops" Maier in an article that appeared in The Craft Beer Quarterly Winter/Spring 2004 issue. John was impressed with the 2004 crop of Sterling Hops. Find out which Rogue beers are Johns favorites. The restaurant seats 50 and has a sushi bar, tepanyaki counter, and tatami room. Chef Morimoto continues to cook in Philadelphia at his namesake restaurant, Morimoto (732 Chestnut Street in Old City, Philadelphia), but it appears he is officially moonlighting in Mumbai. http://www.tajhotels.com/PressRoom/PressReleases/fw-August16-2004-Morimoto. htm On Sunday, November 7th, Chef Morimoto will be one of the guest chefs at Omakase: A Celebration of Modern Japanese Cuisine. They were inducted into one of Europe's oldest trade guilds, Chevalerie du Fourquet des Brasseurs (The Knighthood of Brewers Mashstaffs), during an annual beer festival. http://www.weekenddelabiere.be Philadelphia Daily News Beer Columnist Joe Six-Pack wrote a great piece about the pomp and circumstance behind it all. http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/columnists/joe_sixpack/968598 8.htm Rogue Ales is honored to have both Monks and Friedland selling our brands of Oregon brewed ales and lagers in the Philadelphia market, and we applaud them for doing what they are doing, and doing it so well.
