Five layers of malt create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties. Try Monk Madness with bold flavored and spicy foods, desserts or stinky cheeses. Initially released in the John's Locker Stock draft program, look for Monk Madness in the classic 22-ounce Rogue bottle, available throughout the winter holidays and into early 2007. http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#JLSMonkMadness BEER PAIRINGS FOR THE HOLIDAYS ============================== Rogue's new Monk Madness pairs wonderfully with Turkey and all the trimmings. The browned skin and slightly nutty flavor of the meat blend well with the slight sweetness derived from the five layers of malt and can help counter the sometimes over-salted Turkeys from many grocery stores. This is especially true if you decide to brine your bird. This ales' pronounced aromatics come from the five different hop ingredients with high concentrations of lupulin including Belgian Nobles, and complements stuffing made with sage and rosemary. The bitterness from the hops will also help to release your taste-buds from the onslaught of mashed potatoes and gravy. The 22-ounce bottle of Monk Madness fits nicely into that spot next to the cranberry sauce where you once placed your wine. Share it with your favorite Rogue this holiday season! http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#JLSMonkMadness Other pairing recommendations: Stuff your bird with a cranberry and hazelnut stuffing and serve it accompanied by a bottle of Rogue Hazelnut Brown Ale. Raw oysters and stout are a classic pairing, the bivalve's natural saltiness is balanced by the dark roasted malt and crisp hop flavors in Shakespeare Stout. How about serving Younger's Special Bitter with Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding! The natural carbonation in beer helps lift the rich, fattiness of meats, gravies (and cheese) off your palette. The sweet, roasted, and biscuity flavors from the malts, along with the bitterness from the hops enhance the flavors of a roasted meat, and the buttery richness of yorkshire pudding. For dessert, enjoy a glass of Mocha Porter or Chocolate Stout with Mince Meatpie, Pumpkin Pie or Indian Pudding -- the malt and roasty chocolate overtones of these beers enhances the spices in these classic holiday desserts. These beers can be enjoyed equally well with a selection of cheeses (blues, brie and aged cheddars) at the end of a meal. Rogue offers a wide variety of styles and flavors which can be paired easily with each course your serve this holiday. John refused to tell us what the beer actually will be, but its certain to be strong (probably 10-11% ABV) and have a lot of hops. He sourced the malts from England and France and the hops are German, so that rules out a barleywine and undoubtedly will set this beer apart from any other Rogue Ale that John has brewed. Brew 10,000 is scheduled to be a John's Locker Stock release, with (very) limited distribution of kegs and bottles in the New Year. ROGUE SPIRITS ============= Two distilleries are producing Rogue Spirits in the Rogue Nation: in Downtown Portland Kieran Sienkiewicz is overseeing production of the White Rum, Dark Rum, and Hazelnut Rum; and in Newport, on the Oregon Coast, John Couchot has created Spruce Gin, distilled with twelve ingredients, including locally grown cucumbers and pacific northwest spruce. A special cocktail menu and flights of the Rogue Spirits are available at Rogue Pubs. Rogue cocktails include Spruce Gin and Tonic, Rogue-ito, HazelNut Rum and Coffee, Hot Hazelnut Buttered Rogue Rum. We invite you to create a signature cocktail or winter warmer (how about a Rogue-Toddy or a Rogue & Jerry?) with Rogue Spirits and share it with us. For information about where to find Rogue Spirits, contact Dave Cook at 503-241-3800 x118, email dcook@rogue.com and for product descriptions and other details, visit http://www.roguespirits.com ROGUE ALES COCKTAIL =================== How about a cocktail infused with beer... Richard Lilley at New York's Mandarin Oriental Hotel has created a cocktail named The Black Widow, and while we don't have exact measurements, we can tell you it is made with blackberry brandy, white creme de cacao, Louis Roederer Champagne, and Shakespeare Stout. The MO Lounge menu is as sophisticated as the Black Widow, and includes Peking Duck Flatbread, Open Face Lobster BLT, or Sake Steamed Mussels and Clams. MO Lounge is located on the 23rd floor of the Time Warner Building in Manhattan. A twist on the classic Boilermaker, the Vanilla Bombshell was created by Jeff and Bryce, bartenders at RedBones in Somerville, MA. Proportions and preparations are a snap, drop a shot of Vanilla Stoli into a pint of Rogue Chocolate Stout and enjoy! It makes for an interesting refreshment for the signature barbeque ribs, pulled pork, and delicious buffalo shrimp on Redbones menu! ROGUE HOLIDAY GIFTS =================== Need a special gift for your favorite Rogue? Visit the online store and check out the new merchandise, including the dri-duck canvas Rogue Nation Hat in black or saddle (carhartt khaki) and Rogue Spirits Fidel hat in military green. Rogue's XS goblet or UberFest Pilsner glass make a visual statement about what you are drinking. http://store.rogue.com/cart.php SAY CHEESE ========== Our friends at Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon, known for their award winning, world class blue cheeses, are now making cheddar cheeses infused with Rogue Ales! Chocolate Stout Cheddar has a soft chocolate taste balanced with the creaminess of the cows milk cheddar. A new product, Morimoto Soba Ale Cheddar, is a mild, creamy cheddar with a hint of fruit (soba, also known as buckwheat, is the seed of the flower, and is related to rhubarb--soba has a nutty, sweet flavor). Both the Chocolate Stout Cheddar and Morimoto Soba Cheddar were sampled at the recent SIAL 2006 exhibition in Paris (SIAL, the global food marketplace). Rogue Ales offers both of these cheddars on the Fermerters Platter (along with a Rogue Creamery blue cheese) and for sale in 8 ounce packages to go at our Pubs. Information on Rogue Creamery Cheeses (including terrific gift packages for the holiday) can be found online at http://www.roguecreamery.com P.O.P. ROGUE FILM FEST III NEWS ======================== San Francisco--Several hundred filmmakers and friends flocked to the Rogue Ales Public House in October to view 11 short films in a celebration of creative filmmaking. The film showcase -- projected on three big screens in the pub's expansive dining area -- included comedies, animation, documentaries and drama. A panel of judges rated the films for story, visual impact, sound and overall quality. First place went to "Filter," by Jason Mitchell, a satire about how TV news reports a murder at a convenience store. "The Organist," a comedy directed by Edmund Heaven, took second place and featured a man who tries to emulate Vincent Van Gogh to impress his girlfriend. Third place went to "The Country," by Brady Baltezore, an animated poem about a mouse who discovers fire. The Rogue Ales Short Film Festival showcases short films that run 15 minutes or less. The next festival is set for Wednesday February 21, 2007 at 8pm. Deadline for submissions is February 2, 2007.
