Brewing a new beer for OBF is an opportunity for John Maier and his band of brewers in Newport to experiment. Each year they push the style envelope and 2003 is no exception. Black Brutal Bitter (B3) also known as Rogue Skull Splitter, is an Imperial SchwartzBier according to John. Brewed with Rogue's proprietary PacMan yeast, domestic and German speciality malts, Newport and Amarillo hops, and dry-hopped with Amarillo. The result is a lusty brew that glides over the palate, attacking with intense bitterness and rich caramel roast flavors imparting a long finish on all the senses. ABV is imperial strength (9%-ish), availability is limited to OBF and the Rogue Pubs on tap and bottles, while it lasts. John has certainly influenced the style guidelines of brewing. Two new styles, Imperial or Double Pale Ale and Imperial or Double Red Ales are now categories recognized by the American Homebrewers Association and Institute of Brewing Studies. Both of these extreme styles can be traced to beers brewed by John Maier at Rogue Ales. To learn more about these style guidelines, visit: http://www.beertown.org/education/styles.html The last nine years of OBF beers brewed by Rogue: 2002 - Charlie 1981 Redux 2001 - Brew 5000 (Belgian Dubble) 2000 - Incinerator (smoked) Dopplebock 1999 - Imperial Pilsner 1998 - Brutal Bitter 1997 - DoppleBock 1996 - Imperial India Pale Ale - I2PA 1995 - McRogue Scotch Ale 1994 - Dopple Mogul (twice the grain and hops of regular Mogul) OBF BEER AND CHEESE TASTING =========================== The 3rd annual Craft Beer and Artisan Cheese tasting with Fred Eckhardt will be held at the Rogue Ales Public House in Portland on Wednesday July 23rd from 8 PM to 10 PM.
