The Bard's semi-final bout is Monday April 1st (9am est until 9pm pst) and we urge you to vote. Why? Why Not! It is hardly an April Fool's Joke, unless The Bard gets his butt kicked... Honestly, we want you to vote on April Fool's Day... it only takes one minute--two simple clicks of the mouse--starting here: http://www.realbeer.com/battleofthebeers This semi-final draw is a challenge for The Bard, but we are confident he will make it to the finals. Returning to the here and now, the semis have Shakespeare paired against a beer which is both friend and foe, Alaskan Smoked Porter. The cult status of this beer is legendary, and rightfully so--its the most award winning beer in the history of the American Beer Festival (Rogue Smoke is not far behind...) and it is fair to say Alaskan Smoked Porter is part of John Maier's saga as a brewer, since his first professional brewing job began at Alaskan in Juneau in 1987. John moved back to Oregon in 1989 and has been brewing for Rogue Ales in Newport ever since. Chairman Kaga of Iron Chef fame would ask, Which beer will reign supreme? And wouldn't you know it, Kaga recently portrayed MacBeth on stage, so he too has a Shakespeare connection...but only one beer in this historic duel will make it to the finals in the Battle of the Beers on April 2nd, and you are two clicks away from being part of that history. http://www.realbeer.com/battleofthebeers APRIL FOOL'S ============ The web-duel is real...and we need you to vote...it's not a joke, however, the $64 million dollar question is: What is the history of April Fool's Day? It is a ritual more than an occasion. It is a day to play pranks on others, and get away with a little mischief, but why? April Fool's Day evolved during the Renaissance as a result of the new Gregorian calendar. Prior to this, agrarian society celebrated the New Year with the advent of Spring and a week long celebration from March 25th until April 1st. A scientific look at this is at: http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/GregorianCalendar.html The story goes, those who did not follow the change in calendar (mandated by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582) were subject to practical jokes and pranks, made fools of. Perhaps All Fool's is where tomfoolery is derived from. The French refer to April Fool's as "poisson d'avril" (april fish!) http://www.mun.ca/muse/archive/Volume49/Issue21/feature/fool.html The US Embassy in Sweden web site has this history of April Fool's Day: http://www.usis.usemb.se/Holidays/celebrate/april.html The Urban Legends web site offers this discussion of the history: http://www.urbanlegends.com/misc/april_fools_day_origin_of.html While England did not adopt the Gregorian Calendar until 1751, William Shakespeare, the bard himself, lived and wrote during the time when this new calendar was being imposed upon the subjects of the Catholic Church in other countries. Shakespeare is the connection, no denying. Therefore, Shakespeare Stout is the unoffical beer for All Fool's Ale. This British review of Shakespeare Stout sums it all up nicely, "A stunning American bottle-conditioned stout". The full review and Oxford Bottled Beer Database is on-line at: http://www.bottledbeer.co.uk/beer.asp?beerid=587 Lights, Cameras, Action: The Brewing Industry's Oscar for the darkest, richest and most exquisite Stout goes to... Shakespeare Stout was nominated for a Brewing Industry International Award in Class 3 of the Dark Milds, Stouts and Porters category. The winners will be announced on April 16th in the UK. Terry, a friend of Rogue Ales from the Princess of Wales pub will be at the ceremony to accept the honors, should Rogue win... When not performing on stage, both of these ladies sell Shakespeare Stout and many other Rogue Ales in Manhattan (for the Craft Brewers Guild.)
