Yet not much thought is put into the type of beer we drink while celebrating all things Mexican on May 5; we ask only that the beer be cold, clean and capable of washing down the spicy flavors of Mexican food. Leave it to a brewery named Rogue to add chipotle chiles -- smoked jalapenos -- to its ale and sell the beer at Cinco de Mayo time." From an entertaining review last year, and so apropos this week: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/05/04/WIGA7IJFVB1.DTL Rogue Chipotle Ale is the unofficial cerveza for Cinco de Mayo and is dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, in 1575 he wrote of a an dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer. Chipotle Ale is an amber ale infused with smoked jalapeno (also known as chipotle) in the final fermentation, giving this beer, which has a rich malty backbone, a touch of heat and chili spice in the finish without overwhelming your palette. Try it with the usual suspects, Tex Mex or burgers, or pair it with some spicy Indian or Thai cuisine. Try pairing Chipotle Ale with Rogue Creamery's Smokey Blue, a blue cheese sold smoked over Hazelnut shells--this hard to believe combination is amazing! A favorite beer blend is Chipotle Ale and Rogue Chocolate Stout for a Cinco de Mayo (mole') black & tan... Rogue Chipotle is available in 12-ounce and 22-ounce bottles. http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#chipotle John's Locker Stock News: Recent releases in the John's Locker Stock (JLS) draft program include Latona 20th Anniversary, Dad's Little Helper, and Integrity Ale, brewed for American Craft Beer Week (May 14-20). Integrity is golden in color with a hoppy, fruity aroma--big hop flavor up front complemented by medium body and hoppiness mid-palate. It finishes with a characteristic lingering bitterness. Integrity Ale is created from Beeston Stout, Chariot Pils, Melanoiden, Cara Foam Malts, Amarillo Hops, Free Range Coastal Water, and Rogue's Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast. Measurements: 15.5 Plato, 70 IBU, 76 AA, 14.2 Lovibond. Details on the JLS beers and where you can find them is online: http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#JLS At the 2007 World Beer Championships, hosted by the Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago, Rogue Ales and Eugene City Brewers garnered a dozen awards! http://www.tastings.com/search_beer.lasso Hazelnut Brown Ale scored 92 for a Gold and World Champion designation, the review hardly sounds like beer, “Lovely reddish mahogany color. Deep aromas of buttery roasted cashews and hazelnuts covered in warm caramel. A velvety entry leads to a supple and dryish medium-full body of dried fruit, toffee, and perfectly roasted hazelnuts. Finishes with a long, balanced, darkly toasted raisin nut bread fade. Delicious, perfectly proportioned nut flavor.” http://www.tastings.com/scout_beer.lasso?id=180564 The Imperial Younger’s Special Bitter (93 points, Gold winner) review reads like a beer, “Slightly hazy deep amber color. Earthy hop, dried peaches, and caramel aromas. A smooth supple entry leads to a fruity medium-full body of dried stone fruits, honeyed toast, and delicate spices. Finishes with a graceful fade of sweet, fruity malt and mild bittering hops. A great US interpretation of the style that is eminently drinkable.” http://www.tastings.com/scout_beer.lasso?id=180565 ROGUE SPIRITS: RUM & GIN ======================== The New York Times article on micro distilleries on February 28th featured a photo of John Couchet in Newport at Rogue Spirits distillery.
