Top to Bottom: Honey Harvest, Pollen cakes made with brewer’s yeast, Moving hives to higher ground.

INDEPENDENCE, OR – This spring and summer, 7,156,283 Rogue Farms Honeybees gave us another sweet crop of honey for our mead, kolsch and braggot. Now that winter is here, it’s our turn to take care of them.

Winter in the Wigrich Appellation is tough on bees. They depend entirely on us to keep them fed and warm. In November we moved our 119 hives to higher ground near the hazelnut orchard – out of reach of winter floods, skunks and mice.

During the winter, we feed our bees pollen cakes for protein and vitamins, and sugar syrup to give them energy to stay warm.  In the spring, the bees leave the hive and feast on hazelnut, apple and cherry blossoms. They will pollinate our Rogue Farms Dream pumpkins, roses, jalapenos and marrionberries.

Rogue Farms Honeybees are the smallest soldiers in our revolutionary defense of terroir.  We take care of them in the winter, and they give us a dependable supply of quality honey of known origin for Brewmaster John Maier.

Rogue Ales & Spirits is an agri-fermenter with farms in Independence and Tygh Valley, Oregon.  We grow more than a dozen ingredients, creating a proprietary palate of flavors of known terroir for Brewmaster John Maier to craft beers and spirits of distinction.
