2650 Miles For A Fight

Jason at the start of his hike at the California-Mexico border.

NEWPORT, OR - Jason Evans is not the kind of guy to walk away from a challenge. If anything, he’ll stride right into one. It’s that spirit that has led him on a lifetime of adventures: trekking the jungles of Borneo, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, through the desert sands of Jordan and across much of Europe and China.

Jason’s latest challenge was also his greatest; hiking the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada to raise awareness for the fight against Huntington’s Disease.

The five month journey led him across three states, nine mountain ranges, dense forests and open deserts. He covered a distance of 2,650 miles and climbed nearly 100 miles in total.

He witnessed jaw-dropping scenery and experienced pain so intense he almost gave up. But quitting was never really an option.

For Jason, the fight against Huntington’s Disease (HD) is personal.

HD is a genetic disorder that attacks nerve cells in the brain. Jason’s beloved grandfather died from complications of HD and his mother has the disease. A few years ago, Jason learned he carries the mutated gene and will some day develop HD. His two young sons have a 50/50 chance of carrying the gene.

Jason doesn’t go anywhere without his Dead Guy Ale hat. But after years of accompanying him on his adventures it’s become tattered and worn out. His sister contacted us while he was making his trek through Oregon, and that’s when we heard Jason’s story. We sent him a new hat and some Rogue rations to help him complete his journey.

With Jason finally back home in Corvallis, Oregon we are celebrating his safe return with a party and fundraiser: Friday, October 3rd at the Rogue Bayfront Pub in Newport, Oregon from 5pm to close. Please join us as we toast Jason and carry on the fight against Huntington’s Disease. For more information, please call Jane at 503-241-3800, or go to the Rogue Ales Bayfront Pub Facebook Page.

If you can’t make it in person, please visit Jason’s page on FirstGiving.com.
