A Revolution in Glassware

NEWPORT, OR – We started this project based on the notion that world class stouts need a world class glass. In collaboration with Left Hand Brewing and Spiegelau, we created the Stout Glass. The final Stout Glass we selected highlights both the flavors and nuances of our stouts.

The Rogue Stout Glass.

Finding the perfect glass was time consuming. Several tasting panels were conducted and dozens of iterations of glassware were sampled with all parties present. The final tasting panel was conducted at each brewery independently and the same Stout Glass was unanimously selected by both breweries. Left Hand Brewing and Spiegelau were the clear choice of partners for the Stout Glass project. Left Hand Brewing is an industry leader in stouts and Spiegelau is the authoritative producer of specialty craft beer glassware worldwide.

John Maier, brewmaster at Rogue Ales for 25 years, was intimately involved with the tasting and selection process of the stout glass. His proprietary palate and knowledge of all the ingredients used in brewing Rogue stouts was essential in choosing the right glass tho highlight the rich, roasted malts that we grow on our Rogue Farms. “Not only does it hold the aroma, it brings out all the nuances and delicacies of the beer in a way that other glasses just don’t.”

See it. Smell it. Taste it.

How the Stout Glass Works

Nucleation on the bottom of the glass allows for bubbles to form. These bubbles rise to the top of the beer and when they burst release rich aromas, improving the experience of the beer drinker.

The conical shape of the bottom of the glass lets sediment settle and pushes aromas upwards to the bowl-shaped body. The glass holds over 21oz, more than a standard pour, allowing for plenty of head space.

The thin blown glass keeps the stout cooler for longer and retains head better than a thicker glass. It contains the aromas of the stout rather than letting them slip away. The glass narrows up to the rim, focusing the aromas to the top of the glass to enhance the drinking experience. The more aroma, the more flavor.

Take the Stout Challenge

Step 1: Get your supplies: Bottle of Shakespeare Stout, the Rogue Stout Glass and a standard shaker pint glass.

Step 2: Fill half the Stout Glass and half the shaker pint with Shakespeare Stout.

Step 3: Smell the aroma from the shaker pint.

Step 4: Smell the aroma from the Stout Glass.
